Bike Bag for the Bus

I’m going home next week for a few days, taking the bus home, want to bring bike home. Does anyone have a bike bag i could borrow for a few days, or some boxes i would be able to take with me on the bus? Please let me know.

its just an enormous clear plastic bag, but thats what they sold me to take my bike on

they didn’t give you any problems when you brought it on the bus?

you can rent a box and maybe a bag at CGR, possibly also Yeti …

worst case scenario, grab a cardboard box from any bike shop, duct tape it back together, add some padding (i used plumbing insulation and dollar store towels / futon pads) round the dainty parts of your bike and you’re good to go. a few Europeans i know have used the cardboard box method of bike shipping ~ on airplanes no less ~ for years now without much incident!
As for the boarder, if one is involved, so long as customs can open up the box and have a look to make sure it really is a bike (as opposed to bike shaped cocaine) that is well-used (not purchased and you’re trying to sneak it in) generally they aren’t too bothered. Greyjhound makes you pay an “over sized” fee - keep your receipt or they’ll ding you at each bus transfer. Trust me on this…

happy trails!

cardboard box sounds like a good idea. thanks

I have just recently got back my bike bag, and am happy to loan it out again… it is currently in my office at McGill if you’re interested.

We also rent boxes at lacordee. we only have one per store and only one store in montreal, and they tend to get reserved a long time in advance, so i can check on the status of that. It’s 7$ per day, or 5.25$/day if it’s for a week or more.

Otherwise, the inexpensive solution i’ve used before is to reuse the cardboard boxes the bikes come in. I’ve used that at least twice before. You can even double box it, since different companies have different box sizes. Devinci boxes can fit a trek box inside, and with a bit of foam padding, you’ll be fine. We definitely have at least some devinci boxes if you need.

Be aware that some bus companies charge outrageous fees for boxed bikes though. The bike box, at 23lb cost me more then my ticket to get to Ottawa last summer for the Ottawa Grand Prix!
