So, as most of you (should) know, Mike Hons has been a fixture of the MCT for the past 5(?) years, and he’s moving away from MTL very soon. He has FINALLY finished his PhD (YAY!) and is moving on the bigger and better things (ie. Yale) with his girlfriend.
so that being said, he has let us know that his farewell brew is taking place tomorrow night, after 5:30 at Dieu du Ciel (on laurier and st laurent?), tomorrow, thursday the 23rd of june. so if you know hons, dont know hons, or just want to taste a delish beer (it’s a microbrewery, if i’m not mistaken?), then come on out!!
also, let’s post our “Most-memorable-hons-moment”. I’ll need a few minutes to think of mine.
Thanks for everything these past years mike, i can honestly say you’ve been an influential member of the team and your efforts do not go unappreciated By many!!! We will miss you!! Best of luck in your new life Dr. Hons!!!
It is an incredible microbrewery. Check out their site (http://www.dieuduciel.com/en/home.php) for their current selection. The Aphrodesiac (Cocoa and vanilla stout) is not to be missed.
I will be training all year on East rock and expect to see you all there next year.
Hons, I still don’t know if I’ll be in Montreal this weekend or stay in Gatineau, but in any case it will be hard to make it tomorrow that’s for sure.
When are you leaving exactly? I’ll try to at least pass by to say goodbye.
Most memorable Hons moment #1: first ride with Hons, my first year on the team, with Mike Acton, in the cemetery. Hons had either a bad headache or bad stomach ache midway through the ride, said he would go home take some magic potion and come back and join us on the Wall–> exactly what he did 5 minutes later. HARDCORE!
moment #2-99: every spin class
moment 99-200: every Hons’ attack at the base of the Houde, and also every attack somewhere in the first half of Remembrance on every single KOM
Hons driving the bike van on the highway, in a somewhat “sketchy” way
and much much more. You will be missed, will try to make it to Yale next year and reconnect with East Rock
Can’t make it tomorrow, but best of luck at Yale and congrats on finishing your PHD.
Hons Momments:
-1: After OBC, Minutes after finishing the race. Hons reminding me that doing Yoga as Cross-training only works if combined with some actual training…
-2: At KOM, just having Hons asking if everyone is ready… And then promptly attacking at the base of every climb. Causing the whole group to complain Already. Good “painful” times
Well, I don’t want to embarrass Hons so I’ll be using the phrase “empty his water bottle”
On the way to Rutgers our first year Hons and I were teamed up to drive the van. (17 hrs of driving total) On the way back hons had filled his water bottle up too much and had to stop at a rest stop to empty it.
Two years ago at the white face race Hons once again overfilled his water bottle with a caffeinated beverage, stopped to empty the water bottle, got dropped as the peloton took off, and chased for much of the race. At one point Hons decided I would be his domestique and proceeded to hand me all his trash.
The take home message is that Hons needs to empty his water bottle a lot.
I dragged my ass up a short climb holding his wheel and at the top Hons said “I’ll turn you into a cyclist”. Epic teacher moment. Thanks man. Don’t forget to wear the McGill Kits on, in, and around Yale.
My first introduction to Hons, he was wearing an Alpha Racing jacket. Alpha Racing was a mountain bike race series in Ontario that got me hooked on riding. From then on, I knew we had a special connection.
Other memorable moments: His spin classes always seemed to include a helpful biology/physiology/nutrition lesson.
Most memorable Hons moment:
Listening to his race tips on the drive over to Army for my first race ever while enjoying the peaceful West Point scenery… with Daft Punk blaring. Then pigging out on pizza and watching Shrek for the second night in a row. Plus I got to be his bed buddy.
Also memorable:
Racing with Hons on East Rock!!
I can’t make it tonight. But most memorable Hons moment:
Hons the storyteller. Ask him about Captain America, a triple, and freedom while you still can.
Good luck in New Haven! And don’t make the Yale team too strong.
every single road trip, blasting various ECCC mix CD’s, and singing along like it’s nobody’s business
savoring all the scenery for you on said road trips
that time we were both taking the train to toronto together, and i truly discovered what a science geek you are based on your reading materials (science magazines…)
being the worst co-pilot ever (i will never be able to navigate with your garmin…)
that time you busted your wheel in boston and you got to use a Zipp 404, and as a result you didn’t want to race the next day on your old wheels, and so you were the world’s best soigneur for the day
and of course, the countless spin classes, and all the excellent training tips!!!
