This is actually pretty close.
With Jon VK actually only THREE POINTS BACK on the polka dot jersey, he came out with something to prove. Bernard of UdM was also in attendance in addition to Brandon, donning the coveted polka dot jersey.
Camillien Houde began with everyone seeing stars, or spots anyway as Brandon set a punishing tempo up the slopes. Bernard and Jon sat on until the lookout where Bernard made his move, slowly accelerating away from the group. Brandon countered with a full out pounding of his pedals, setting a pace that no other could follow to yield full points at the onset. Bernard rolled in not far behind, with Jon almost a minute back, no doubt saving himself for the remaining climbs of the day.
Ridgewood began furiously with Jon launching an attack from the base. Bernard followed however Brandon was caught asleep at the wheel, still in the big gear combo for the descent from Mont Royal. He quickly resigned himself to 3rd place. Jon’s attack once again proved that fortune favours the brave, earning a first place with Bernard in tow.
With the KOM points of the day still tied at this point, Jon set a torturous pace up La Rampe. Bernard, wanting to find a victory on his home soil of UdM, rode with the strength of ten men, attempting a move near the base. This turned out to be a tactical error, as Jon followed his wheel and countered, with Brandon breathing down his neck, leaving Bernard unable to follow.
After stopping to pick up his pump which had fallen in the middle of the road, (and was almost run over by a bus) Brandon regained contact with the lead group and launched a furious attack from the base of conservatoire. Just before the steep road, he realized he was still in his big chainring but cranked out the final section at 40 rpm (Ulrich style) to take the win. Bernard was closing and almost had his day, but it was not to be. Jon 3rd.
The cemetery was climbed from the base (Cote Ste-Catharine) and the Quebecois duo launched an attack right away. Brandon could not follow on the steep grades of ave. Fernhill and was separated, but fired up the diesel engines to start reeling them back on ave. mont-royal. Just like the great fisherman Bob Izumi, he reeled in his opponents, passing Bernard shortly after the cemetery gate, and regaining contact with Jon before hitting “the wall”. Brandon dug deep into his suitcase of courage, but could not follow as the road turned skyward on the wall. Jon’s stringy-ness proved a valuable asset on the wall, as he accelerated away to take the win.
In the end, there were no big shakeups this week as the gap in overall points between the two leaders remained unchanged.
Hope to see you all next week for this year’s FINAL EDITION of the KOM competition
