Publicity ride for Cancer

Not sure if anyone is interested in helping out with this, it would be the Thursday, Sept 24th, and seems like not too much of a time commitment if you don’t have class or anything important to do.
If you want to help out, sign up here.

McGill Cycling coaches,

My name is Kim Bulger, I am the President of the McGill Cancer Society. I received the following email as a request for assistance for a cycling event. Our club is quite small and even if any of us were cyclers, I don’t know how much we could do! I want to help with this event but am not sure how to gather a bunch of cyclists- you seemed like the right people to contact.
So I don’t know if this event is something that would be ideal for your teams but if you could seriously consider it and get back to me as soon as possible, that would be wonderful.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at this email address.
Thank you and take care,

Kim Bulger

Dear Students of McGill Cancer Society,

I am writing to request your assistance for the 2009 Peter Thomas Cycling Challenge. I feel that we share something in common for this event which is to fight cancer and find a cure.

We are having a 1,000 mile ride in 10 days from Montreal to New York, USA which commences on September 24, 2009. This “core” team consists of family and friends of Peter Thomas, who passed away of GIST cancer, three years ago. For the background of Peter and the ride see website: This is a story which has touched my heart since riders from all over the globe are participating. They have come (even Peter’s wife and 10-year old son) at their own expense to raise awareness and funds for this incurable cancer.

I would like to enlist as many McGill student cyclists as possible who would “escort” the GIST cyclists out of the city. Your enthusiasm and energy alone can bring some awareness for the event and to the riders. They have enlisted a guide but this would make the start of the ride even more special.

Would you please help us? The GIST cyclists will be departing from the Hotel Brossard, 7365, Marie-Victorin Blvd. Brossard, Quebec (Located at the foot of the Champlain Bridge, only 15 minutes from downtown Montreal …). I can coordinate all details with you.

I look forward to your response. Thanks very much for your time.

Hi Kim,

I am so pleased to hear from you – I was ready to give up! Although I remember when … how hectic it is -

Anyway, this ride is a very personal one which is being completed by a community of family and friends all around the world – all for the cure of an insidious cancer called GIST. You can get more details on the website Also attached is the PR.

I know this may be asking a lot, but I would like to have a small (large?) group of McGill Student Cyclists to escort the GIST cyclists out of Montreal. I’m trying to get some official or the Mayor to make a statement. Bottom line is that we need all the publicity we can get.

This is a 1,000 mile ride (Montreal to New York) and they have been planning this for over one year. They need some kind of grand sendoff. Of course, since there is little budget for travel, I can’t be there so I am looking to the GIST crew to set up for me. I am open to any ideas that you may have.

The ride begins at the Hotel Brossard on September 24 at around 7:30. For publicity sake, they are willing to leave a little later. The cyclists are having a practice round on the 23rd which we are attempting to ride pass City Hall and get the Mayor or an official for a photo op.

Kim, you are the only one who has responded to this plea and if nothing happens, I still am very thankful that the thought was there. Let me know what you think.
