Doping email from Athletics

So I am supposed to distribute this to our athletes. Here it is.

MEMORANDUM

To: Director of Athletics
From: Tom Huisman, Director of Operations & Development
Date: January 8, 2010
Re: Drug Education and Doping Control Update

As we begin the New Year (best wishes to everyone), I would like to provide a few updates and reminders with respect to drug education and doping control. Please forward a copy of this information to the appropriate individual(s) at your school.

Marijuana - Sanctions and Public Disclosure

On December 17, CCES announced the names of two junior football players that received a one-month sanction associated with marijuana. This was effectively the first time that a first violation for marijuana resulted in a sanction and public disclosure. As these two football players discovered, the new Canadian Anti-Doping Program, which came into effect January 1, 2009, brings an increased risk of suspension and public disclosure with marijuana violations. Members may wish to incorporate this information into their anti-doping messaging to student-athletes.

Pseudoephedrine – Is Back on the Prohibited List

Pseudoephedrine has been reintroduced onto the Prohibited List effective January 1, 2010. Pseudoephedrine, a stimulant commonly found in over-the-counter cough and cold medications, is prohibited and will be tested for in-competition only.
Athletes are advised to consider the use of alternative permitted medications for the treatment of coughs, colds and upper respiratory infections, in consultation with a team doctor or physician. A list of prohibited and permitted cough and cold medications is available at www.cces.ca/en/coughcold.

Doping Control Data Collection Requirements

Members are reminded that CCES requires up-to-date information with respect to the time and locations of both in-season and out-of-season training and practice sessions for men’s & women’s ice hockey and men’s football.
The traditional pen and paper method of the Sport Profile is still available for this year, however we are encouraging the submission of this data through the ADAMS online system. It is anticipated that ADAMS will become the standard submission format in 2010-11. ADAMS is an efficient and effective online system that enhances the ability of schools to submit the doping control data requirements. The instructions on how to use ADAMS are available within Policy 40.30.3.6, and CCES has a dedicated support person for anyone needing assistance in using the system.

CCES Drug Education Resources and CIS E-Learning Course

Members are reminded that January-entering student-athletes are required to complete the CIS-CCES doping education e-Learning course in advance of their participation in competition (conference or non-conference).

Did You Know?

The Global Drug Reference Online (DRO), which is available at www.globaldro.com, provides athletes and their support personnel with easily accessible and accurate information about which drugs, medications, and other substances are prohibited.

yeah… note to self, lay off the sudafed. Things might get uppity.

Oh good, Prolong isn’t on the list. With the unfair advantage it gives us, I’m surprised it’s not banned!

Prolong - Based on science, perfected for athletes.

I want my money back…the steroids aren’t working.
