I was riding down Atwater and the driver infront of me stopped to turn into the Esso gas station rather abruptly (my guess is she just realized she was out of gas and desparately needed to re-fuel- probably didn’t check her rear view).

Although I was not going downhill, I guess I was travelling a little too close and/or going a little too fast (for a bike that is) to stop in time. Thankfully her car was at an angle ready to turn, because I skidded and hit her back bumper with the side of my bike, bounced off, and landed face first on the road.

No damage to the frame! Only to the fork and brakes. The front of my helmet was destroyed though, which means it did its job. Concussion and broken teeth = no Yale…and an insatiable appetite for cycling.

We always want what we can’t have, am I right? :slight_smile:

An email I received today:

ECCC,

11 Harvard bikes were stolen Saturday night from our van in the hotel parking lot in West Haven. A few have been recovered. We are working with the police department right now. I’m attaching a list of the bikes that have not been found.

Please take a moment to check the attached list and forward it to bike shops, email lists, etc – as many people as possible in case the thieves attempt to sell.

The lock on our van was smashed off. We can’t emphasize enough: bike thefts from vehicles are a real threat. Please take precautions, and bring your bikes into your hotel rooms; we don’t want this doesn’t happen to anyone else.

EDIT: On a side note, someone left with my yellow fold-over sleeping pad. It’s my sister’s, who would gladly have it back :slight_smile: that kind, but in yellow.
