Electric bikes

I saw a couple guys zipping around town on these things late last night. Looked like fun; they were pretty fast.

I’ve always thought electric bikes were pretty pointless. They have zero range and they are expensive! A refit kit is at least 1K so most bikes top out over 2K and many tip into 3K plus.

All for a product that cannot move you much more than 40 km unassisted. That translates to about 1 hr - 1.5 hr riding time. Get some bloody exercise in that 1hr.

You can easily find a used fueled moped for 1.5K and a brand new vespa is about 4K. Those give you 100 km range on a single tank and are far more useful little machines all around. At least you can get shit done with them. You look about as bloody dorky either way too.

Don’t even get me started about how so not “green” giant Li-Mn packs are for purely recreational purposes either.

And yes, I am a debbie downer.

Personally I’m contemplating something like this, power on demand to the sidecar and studded tires and they work just fine it the winter:

wow, what a coincidence, i’ve been eyeing these myself for quite a while now.

Looks like a Ural motorcycle, made in Russia from a BMW factory captured in Germany during WWII, and entirely shipped out east!

I would not go for the optional side-car drive train because it makes it so much harder to disconnect should you want to cruise just on the motorcycle.

Awesome!

Yup, Ural T. Got to try a much older model in Russia at it was wicked sweet.

I think only the base and retro Urals come with unpowered sidecars, the rest it’s a base feature not an option.

Powered sidecar makes a big diff in snow or offroad though.
