Don’t know if anyone here has a set of these or knows someone who does. There has been a recall:
thats what you get for a front carbon/radial spoked wheel
because alloy spokes or wheels never fail right?
hahaha yes that is exatcly right 8)
Here’s what a guy from a shop said in the roadbikereview.com forums said about the R-SYS recall…
Let me reword that for you…
I called the number provided, which is answered somewhere in India. After much “What? Huh? What?” I discovered the following:
-
They expect the BIKE SHOP to provide the customer with the Aksium wheelset. Yeah… we have a ton of those hanging around.
-
They didn’t say how exactly they were going to pay the bike shop for the Aksiums we would be giving away.
-
They did say that under NO circumstances should the customer be allowed to ride the front wheel even one more day. (We have a customer’s bike in here for service, which is why I called) They suggested I put ANY other kind of front wheel on it, or not let him have the bike back until March 31 when the new R-SYS front wheel will be ready. Again, no mention of sending us a set of Aksiums to provide to our customer.
So, there ya have it. If your shop has Aksiums in stock, they are supposed to give them to you. If you bypass the shop and call Mavic (India?) directly, perhaps they send you a set of Aksiums themselves?
Oh, and we have S3s in stock now. I put the R-SYS wheel on the back of the S3 frame to see how bad it was. hehehehe. You wouldn’t even get one full revolution of the crank.
We put on some Reynolds Assaults too…it looks like there’s about 3mm clearance between the stays and the spokes, so I guess those are good. Alex500 wheelset? Don’t even think about it. lol[/img]
Hilarious. A broken face is price you pay for weight savings, I guess.
I’m a bit confused about the S3 comment, the S3 does not have an especially tight clearance between wheel and seat tube nor does it have unusually tapered seat stays so I’m not sure what he is on about - although unless I know the guy personally I trust bike shop guys (especially guys claiming to work at one online) about as much as snake oil salesmen.
I understand that the issue with the R-sys is the following - the spokes are very fragile and prone to snapping when hit by crap flying into the wheel which can cause the wheel to collapse.
Ruh Roh!!!
thats bloody scary.
And Mavic’s response:
