No bikes on campus? WTH?

Hey all,

I was just told this morning by a McGill security guard that I need to dismount and walk my bike through campus. Has anyone heard about this ridiculous rule?

Where were you?

i was walking by the redpath then towards the arts building and then around the construction site and everyone was walking their bike this morning and i was like … wtf?!?

what pisses me off are not our mcgill security who think they are hot shit, but rather McGill whose construction site has been going on for EVER… and will not be completed by 2010.

and im talking about whats happening in from of the Maconnell building and also right in fornt of the macdonald building. The sidewalks are not availalbe and because we cannot cut though the construction site towards to Arts building (very busy walkway) there is an even more intense flux of pedenstians, cars and bikes (and the bikes due to the fact that the bikepath on milton end right in front of the gates so ppl go though them to reach sherbrook.

anyways… mcgills renovations are taking forever. thats the problem. if we were in Germany this outta have been completed a year ago.

I was at the crossroads, right where we had our team table set up for the 12 hours of McGill. I ended up biking back down to Sherbrooke, then up University to the physics building ON THE SIDEWALK.

Hey Pete,

I think the “walk your bike” thing was particular to today in light of recent construction. I go through there almost every morning and this is the first time I’ve had any problems

Sorry, I think that it will be for more than one day… here is a piece of an email we received from the Administration:
Subject: Important Parking and Circulation Restrictions on Main Campus due to Construction Effective Wednesday, September 23

In order to complete the construction on the square in front of the James Administration Building, the roadway in front of the McConnell Engineering, Macdonald Engineering and Macdonald-Harrington buildings will be completely blocked off to traffic for approximately three weeks effective September 23, 2009. As a result, vehicular and cyclist traffic will not have access to lower campus and some sections of the Main Campus as detailed below:
Areas south of the Engineering Buildings and the Arts Building to the upper part of the main Campus (in front of the James Administration, Wilson Hall, Rutherford Physics, and Wong buildings) and vice versa via the roadway in front of the Engineering buildings.
The roadway east of Dawson Hall and in front of the Ferrier and James Administration buildings will continue to remain closed to vehicles ( with the exception of emergency vehicles).

Please note the following parking restrictions on the Main Campus during the same period:
Milton Gate access will be available to permit holders and visitors who have provincial parking permits for persons with disabilities, short-term delivery vehicles, and construction vehicles that require access to the worksite.
Roddick Gate access will be available to permit holders, visitors who have provincial parking permits for persons with disabilities, and short-term delivery vehicles. Visitor parking may be permitted subject to availability in this area. Permit holders who cannot find a space below the Arts Building may park in the overflow sites in the FDA/Engineering courtyard or behind the Faculty Club. Please see www.mcgill.ca/parking/overflow/ <file://www.mcgill.ca/parking/overflow/>

At the end of the three-week period, (tentatively scheduled for October 23), circulation will return to its current configuration, now blocked around Dawson Hall.

Safety Message
Parking and Security Services would like to advise everyone about the new traffic signage and initiatives that were designed to make our Campus a safer place. Three new stop signs will be installed at various locations on the Main Campus near the Y intersection and speed bumps, along with related signage that will be installed on the main roadway from the Roddick Gates to the Arts Building. Please be alert to these upcoming changes.

Please visit our website at www.mcgill.ca/parking/announcements http://www.mcgill.ca/parking/announcements for a map detailing the circulation changes on the main Campus for the duration of this phase of the project.

University Services would like to thank you in advance for your cooperation.
Looks like this construction project will never end.
