Removing Pedals

Anyone have any Bright ideas for removing pedals. I have tried WD-40 Brute strength. Nothing is working. SOme website suggest fire. I am not sure I want to set my bike on fire and I don’t see the point seen as the pedal and the crank will heat up equivalently.

get some kind of extension for your pedal wrench like a heavy duty plastic pipe or something to give you more leverage. We have something like that at the shop. Also, make sure you’re turning them the right way. (I assume you know this but…) right pedal unscrews counter clockwise, left pedal unscrews clockwise.

What is the spindle and crank materials? I wouldn’t torch alu cranks.

I have a huge piece of steel pipe that you can borrow as a cheater bar.

WD-40 is utterly crap for unsticking parts too. You need something like Kano Kroil or a similar deeply penetrating oil that has some degunking agents in it.

You also need to do multiple applications over a longer period of time, you can’t just apply and then wrench away.

To join the anti-WD-40 bandwagon… I’ve heard bad things about it. It’s a solvent so you might want to watch long-term damage on your crank threads.

Ya. I know It’s Bad. It’s Just Im trying to remove the old pedals from the broken bike to put them on my non broken one. Jason where do I get these Really good Solvents like Kano Kroil. It’s Keo Blades pedals. whatever they are made of and Alu cranks.

Automatic Transmission Fluid sometimes works

I would take it to a shop and make it someone else’s problem

If you drop by la cordee they probably won’t even charge you. You can get most of the pedals off with a large pedal wrench, and except for the most extreme cases, a pipe extension will finish it off.

Cool. Thanks. If I can’t get them off. I’ll take care of this mess after Easter. Ugh

WD-40 dissolves oils, some oxides and similar, it won’t damage metals.

I got my Kano Kroil from Amazon but they won’t ship it to Canada anymore. You can try liquid wrench or PB blaster (I think PB is better) and those are available at Canadian Tire.

Another thing you can try is ammonia or liquid drain cleaner. I’d still use a penetrating oil first before going wild with a big lever arm simply to avoid galling both parts.

Lesson to be learned here: grease all of the assembly interfaces of your bikes.

I think I have an industrial brand of stuff a little like WD-40. I don’t know if it would help much but let me know if ever you need it.

Ya… I took the Jeremy Clarkson approach. Bigger Hammer. But definitely re greasing the pedals often.
