So You Want to Race your Bicycle 2014 Edition

thats a scary prospect

The better question rather than if something is legal is: if this breaks in a crash how sad would I be?

If you’re riding C and downwards you might want to reconsider using the bling… risk of damage goes up exponentially

The bike gods usually gift you with a crash during your first race with said “bling”

You guys are just scaring everyone, I didn’t crash in my first season in the ECCC! Mike is just a bitter old guy who broke his new ‘bling’ in unfortunate circumstances.

I’ve never crashed in any collegiate race either. Granted, n=3 but I’ve also been known to crash by on my own so…

Man I think I’d rather not post my crash/no-crash ratio. It’s not pretty… but I can honestly say they were all to some degree avoidable by me, so it’s something I can work on at least.

From Joe Kopena, indeed, racers in Men’s C and above will need UCI licences. Day licences will only be valid for Men’s D and Intro (he didn’t say anything about women’s)

Bummer. Thanks for sharing, Pete.

Hi racers and welcome back from South Carolina. I’m insanely jealous looking at all the pictures on Facebook.

This is just a heads up that the team will be driving to Kingston on the weekend of March 29th for the Queen’s Criterium, instead of all the way down to Boston as we had previously stated. This is the second year the Queen’s team has held the event, and excitingly for this year they somehow got permission to hold the race right on campus instead of in an industrial park. Last year was a lot of fun, and I can only imagine that it’s going to be even more awesome this year. Let’s show Queen’s who’s boss and have a great turnout!

Watch the forum for individual posts about all these races coming soon. Phil is taking point on our first race at Bard in two weekends’ time. He should have a post with details and gauging interest sometime in the next few days, and I should have a similar post for Queen’s coming shortly after.

Let’s get excited about racing! Just waiting for spring…

ALSO: A reminder to purchase your FQSC license NOW if you plan on doing so. We even submitted our paperwork early enough this year that McGill Cycling is on the team list!

Get in touch with me if you need any help with the laughably bad French only website.

What, no Boston??? This disappoints me :frowning:

I will definitely be looking to go to Boston instead of Queen’s, so if anyone is interested in going too please contact me. If there’s only one or two others it would probably be alright if we all stayed at my mom’s house about an hour away.

Uh Oh! Queens showed us up this past weekend at the races.

Better bring our A game to the Queens race on the 29th and put things right.

Vlavallee - we’re really looking forward to the McGill competition at the Queen’s Crit. This year’s race should be awesome. Thanks for supporting guys, see you March 29th!

Haha Drew - we got a pretty intense message from Etienne via email as well. Sounds like the competition is ON!

That new Queen’s course will be fun. Too bad it doesn’t go further down University to include the cobbles, but it’ll still be a riot to zoom around the ghetto with no cars.

2015 McGill Ghetto Crit - East on Prince Arthur, South on Parc, West on Sherbrooke, North on University (Finishing sprint uphill on university)

Need some help with the FQSC licence.
The only options I can see that are route et piste are Senior 1, 2 or Maitre M1, M2, M3. Am I too old for senior 3? If so, what is the best choice?

@Trevor: “Cobbles” More like smooth paving stones, but yes, it’s too bad they don’t go further into campus.

Pete: New rule for this year:

Senior 3 H

So yeah, looks like you might be too old. If so, there’s no way you can do senior3 races - which sucks and I’m sorry. I’d recommend going for Masters M1, your age group - you can always register for senior 1+2 races except provincial and national champs with a masters license, so it gives you both options.

“M2 H: catégorie maître homme composée principalement de cyclistes de 40 à 49 ans, auxquels
s’ajoutent des coureurs maîtres plus jeunes qui avaient de la difficulté à se maintenir dans le peloton et à participer activement à la course des M1 ou des MA. À l’évidence, un maître de 50 à 59 ans qui domine par ses qualités physiques et techniques dans la catégorie M3 sera invité à joindre celle des M2.”

@Pete: you can buy an M2 licence if you feel like the M1 category is too competitive for you (it is the equivalent of previous years’ MA). MA races used to be pretty equivalent to Sr1-2 races, so I suppose M2 races will be more like Sr3 races.

Thanks for the tips! I really don’t want to spend $160 on a licence though. The tough decisions of racing.
