Try-outs 2013

This is possibly the BEST way to get acquainted with the team, it’s members, it’s riding levels (beg, int, adv), and it’s riding expectations. Not to mention that it’s one of the only times that almost the entire squad shows up for a single ride.

We’ll be meeting on SATURDAY (September 14th) at the Roddick gates @ 9am and be heading over to the Estacade at a very relaxed pace to do our more serious riding. Once there we’ll split into our three groups, each with a designated leader. The goal is for each group to try some smooth pace lining, holding the speed in a target range.

Goal speeds:
Adv - 40-45+km/h
Int - 33-37km/h
Beg - 27-30km/h

When the end of the seaway is getting near (~2km to go), feel free to open up the throttle and see what the group can do! But before that it’s best to try and stick together.

After one trip down the estacade, people can switch which groups they were in and either challenge themselves more, try an easier pace, or just go ride with different faces.

Bring water and some food! Total ride time will be ~2hours

MOST IMPORTANT: Helmets, two working brakes, and non fixed geared bikes are an absolute requirement to join this ride.

I don’t mind leading intermediate should the need arise.

Also, after this ride I am going to go do PRO-tour loops with the Pros who will be in town for the weekend ~fan-girl freakout~

Do we all get cool photos of us like Dennis got last year? BIG smiles thumbs up

I’m also in for girly freakouts with Mike after.

Just a heads up that the CCB will be doing their last TT of the year that morning, starting at 8 30 at the far end of the Estecade. They should be done by the time yall get there, but there might be some stragglers.

What time do they usually end?

It’s actually starting at 8 so we should be fine. 9-9 30 when it starts at 8 is reasonable.

Will I need to defend my KOM on the way back??

Bump! Let’s get more riders!

Just a reminder that this ride is called “TRYOUTS”, but that’s only because of tradition. There are no cuts that get made, and it’s not so much that the team is trying you out, it’s that YOU’RE trying out the team.

ALSO, EVERYONE WITH 2012-2013 MCGILL KITS WEAR THEM!! The weather is supposed to be nice, so jersey and bibs will do. If we have a decent amount of people wearing the kits we can take a GROUP PICTURE once we get to the estacade.

I can ride with no group and bring big camera. Gotta save some legs for the pro’s reconnaissance anyways.

I might show up to say hi and join everyone for the ride too.

I’m planning on meeting you guys there since I’m coming from that way. Anyone have a number that I can have in case trouble arises?

Consensus on wearing wool today? My natural chilly weather coat hasn’t grown in yet.

Wool is pretty warm.
I think windvest over a jersey and arm warmers would be ideal.

Knee warmers if you have them!

Two flats so far. Out :frowning:

Thanks to those in the beginner group: Good ride with a safe and comfortable pace-line. Hope to see you out on a McGill ride again.
Cheers, Charles

BTW - you were missed you Dhruv

I missed Dhruv. Until next year, my friend.

This ride was supposed to be the glorious beginning of a weekend after a brutal week

Well, that was fun.

Hope everyone had a good time!

A big thanks to Jon for taking the photos and already updating the homepage!!

Kudos to you buddy, next beer is on me.
