Wheelset advice

So, my Trek 1.2 came with a set of AlexRims AT450 wheels, and a friend of mine has offered some Mavic Open Sport (with at most 250 km on them, used for a month) from 2009, although he still has to confirm the price. My question is i guess, should I stay or should I go? haha… After reading with what happened with the Mavic recall of the R-sys, all I read online are negative reviews for Mavics so I don’t know if I should trust them or not, although lots of people say that they’ve improved and the spokes have been reinforced…ill definitely check them out if I were to buy them for any cracks and stuff, but if they were to be fine, would you guys recommend them to me?

thanks!

mavic are great wheels. I’f you’re going to pick up a set of wheels though look into mavic open pro with ultegra hubs and dt swiss spokes like these

i don’t think i could even break them. The r sys are an exception, no need to worry. Unless you’re getting an amazing deal on the open sport, go for the open pro

I also have had at least 4 pairs of mavic wheels, road and mountain, and have never had any problems with them. (well, once the pawls of a mavic downhill wheel got messed up but mavic fixed it for free)
I’m a fan.

open sport is a rim only, what hub does the wheel come with?

If you are hoping for wheels that you don’t need to be super light, this would probably be a good option because it is totally rebuildable. ie. If you crash and taco the wheel, or get your spokes ripped out by a derailleur, you can just go buy standard ones from any shop to repair the wheel. Also, if it is a standard hub, you can get all the spare parts at any shop easily for overhauls, etc.

The R-Sys was a design catastrophe for Mavic, trying to push the limits of light wheels by using exotic materials that they didn’t fully understand. They have already recalled the wheels once, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they have to recall them again as I’ve heard there are still some problems.

The Open Sport is old school and proven, so you shouldn’t worry about it blowing to pieces as you might with the R-Sys. If the price is right, go for it. I second Alex’s idea about the Ultegra/OP wheel if you have the money for it and want something a little nicer though.

thanks guys, i’m waiting for his response on the price, but im glad to know that they’re trustworthy wheels

Hey I am also in need of a wheel set and was looking to buy Mavic open pros and 105 Hubs, because that is all I can afford. However, I was wondering If anyone knew a good shop to go to get the wheel built, because I have no idea how to do it and would prefer not to ride on unsafe wheels.

I got ultegra/OP from the internets. bicyclewheelwarehouse.com
