Looks like the weather might hold out for another week. Accuweather says it will be a balmy 9 next saturday (although that can certainly change). Anyone interested in driving out to Sutton and doing the loop?
I’ve never done this so we’ll need someone to lead it. We also need people to drive. If you have a car and some room, let us know. I can take two more people with me.
I imagine this will be an intermediate + level ride and we should probably leave around 9 from the gates to get there in time to ride. Enjoy the weather while it lasts!
I’ll consider it, but would probably have to get it done as early as possible to be back for dinner time. Could potentially get a car with one extra spot.
looks like there is interest. hopefully we can figure out transportation, timing, etc… I don’t mind leaving earlier, especially with the recent time change.
i checked google maps and it looks pretty straightforward- i am thinking the loop that goes by jay peak would be the one we do. can someone provide the details as in how many kms, how much climbing, how long it takes, etc? looks like we could have a pretty strong group which would be cool.
If you have any spots left I am interested in coming.
I have not done this route before and do not have a car, but, from what I have read the climbs are:
(1) the backside of Jay Peak (1600ft, 1200ft descent)
(2) the climb past Jay Peak ski area (1400 ft, 1750 ft descent)
(3) north to Vt Rt 105 (700 ft)
(4) There is also Chemin Scenic Road (500 ft) which can be done twice.
I’ll let you know tomorrow whether or not I’ll be going with a car. If I do I believe chris will be taking the spot.
I know a portion of the loop close to Jay. There is a pretty good climb and descent over Jay and some rolling hills in the area. Nothing too painful. I imagine the loop would be done clockwise. Last time I went down from Jay in the other direction we had a scary encounter with some potholes.
o.k. not sure what to do here… bummer that there is interest but no transportation.
i’d still like to do the ride as it still looks like the weather is going to hold. i’d like to bring someone that knows the route so it looks like Jonathan gets priority for one place. are you in for sure, jonathan?
any ideas how to handle the second and remaining spot?
This is a university team, after all. Jim, I sugest that you give everybody a number and go to http://www.random.org/integers/ to pick a winner. It’s your car, though, so your choice.
jeroen, if you could get a car that would be great. you should be able to fit two bikes in: one in the trunk and one in the back seat. I’ve done that many times myself. You could probably fit in two bikes in the back seat actually (just make sure and bring an old towel or something to put on the backseat.
I can actually take 4 people but only 3 bikes… so maybe together we can take a total of 6 (including ourselves). That would be a pretty good group!
As for choosing, I am fine doing a random selection for open spots.
Shall we say 8:00 am to get out and avoid traffic. Google maps says it takes 1 1/2 hrs to drive to Sutton. That would get us rolling around 10 am.
giving everybody an equal chance, eric? psh, boring. i say we have a darwin inspired word off as to why we should be selected.
here are some pros to giving me a ride:
-i am an excellent singer
-i keep secrets.
-i am mad cuddly, yo
-i am not very good at road trip games so you will look awesome by comparison.
-ive got the granola
